Compare two texts. Explain what the evidence allows.

Year 7 selective entry · Year 6 reading foundation

Read three original pairs: a notice and diary, a newsletter and email, and a museum caption and poem. Two complete models lead into 20 untimed questions, from guided comparison to independent practice.

This is one Stage 3 English reading skill, with original texts and questions for practice.

The lesson route and practice need a saved Year 6 goal and current learning access. Four print editions are available through the learning platform.

Follow a claim back to the words

Text A · public notice“The council expects to reopen the bridge on Friday, provided the safety inspection is complete.”
Text B · diary“On Monday I reached the creek just as the first orange fence panel clicked into place.”
Supported conclusionThe bridge closed on Monday. Friday reopening is a plan with a condition, not a completed fact.
The two texts answer different questions. Compare their evidence before drawing an inference.

How the learning builds

  1. Prepare. Read the labelled sentences and identify each text’s purpose.
  2. I do. Follow two complete, answered comparisons with evidence and limits.
  3. We do. Try five questions with three thinking steps and a hint.
  4. You do. Try five with lighter support, then ten independently. Check each answer against the precise words.
  5. Return. Revisit the idea after 3, 7 and 14 days.

The saved lesson tree

The goal uses the existing Compares and synthesises texts on the same topic lesson and its 15 mapped prerequisites. The two direct prerequisites are drawn here; the earlier lessons remain in the saved plan. This focused practice has learner and full online explanations and separate print editions.
